Presidential Proclamation--Italian American Heritage and Culture Month

The President of the United States Barack Obama released a press release yesterday declaring October 2010 Italian American Heritage and Culture Month.

As an Italian American I am very pleased to see the White House formally releasing statements acknowledging the great history of the Italian Americans in the United States. Not only that, but if you go on the Whitehouse website you can see how this statement along with the entire press release is available for viewing. This President is all about transparency and social media. That works for me.

Thank you President Obama

President Obama Visits Ghana & Talks About His Immigrant Roots.

As I watched Anderson Cooper tonight on AC360, CNN-- I was so intrigued by President Obama's responses on how and what it means to return to the place of your ancestral roots. He emphasizes how some African Americans come to Africa and become overwhelmed by the feelings of cultural pride that some even relocate, but others visit Africa realizing how American they are and could never live there. I think the concept of returning to your cultural roots can make you realize many things and as Italian Americans we can relate to that cultural feeling of pride and the emotions that come along with returning to your roots. The President visited many places in Africa and including a place where many Africans were tortured, which was an important and incredibly emotional part of history. As we move along with history, we are witnessing an African American president returning to a part of his cultural origin and listening to his ideas on how cultural identity molds your life. I think as Italian Americans or any culture-American you can relate to this conversation, thought and progression of cultural history.

Racial Identity- Italian Americans or American? What do you think?

Interesting opinion section today in the news surrounding the terms on racial identity such as African-American, Irish American, Italian American. Are you less American if you say you're Italian-American? What are we really trying to exemplify about our heritage or identity when we label ourselves? Food for thought today.

Let me know your thoughts, comment this post!

President Obama Officially In Office, What a Day!

Today marks the official day as President Obama takes the oath of office. The celebrations, ceremonies and luncheons are enough to exhaust anyone, so how are he and Michelle doing? I'd say pretty well, they looked great in all senses. Its a magical day for many people, who are renewed because of President Obama's energy to better the USA. We are American, and so to celebrate a renewed America and resurrect the American dream is worth celebrating. The same dream my parents came here for is the same dream we heard about today in his speech. I can't tell you how happy I am to be part of history where not only is the President hip but shares a cultural understanding of America. I really look forward this era and wish the Obamas the best. Next and final stop tonight, the White House.

Italians Are Excited For the Obama Inauguration This Week.

The week has finally arrived where President elect Obama will be sworn into office as the President of the United States. These are historical times with much at stake and the whole world watching. The world, including our very own Italy. Many Italians were supportive of the Obama campaign and ultimately wanted him to win this years election, lucky us that happened.
The Italians view Obama as a symbol of positive change, as do I. I can tell you from a daughter of an immigrant perspective, my parents are also hopeful of the positive change. America and positive change go hand in hand, so when we've endured 8 years of hell, we can only hope that that was the worst of it and we are coming out of the tail end of the horror. Bush did what he had to, protected the USA at a time of attack, but the Republican party ways sealed his fate as the worst President in history. He can thank them in private, he'll have plenty of time on his hands. America is the dream and the Italians realize that America resurrected and liberated their country after World War II. The relationship between our two countries is solid. I think I can say for many immigrant children that we are all excited to see a great President sworn into office who understands what the people need. Way to go Obama!

President Elect Obama Wears Italian Suits-Who Knew He Was Such a Fashionista?

Its with great pleasure to report that President elect Obama is well on his way to becoming a fashionista by his taste in suits. Its been reported that the President's taste is usually simple but yet classy. He tends to go for a sophisticated look which translates to of course, Italian. He's sported suits from top Italian designer such as Ermenegildo Zegna. I will say President elect Obama definitely portrays a certain stylish and modern look. You go prez. Not only did he win over the world, but he's also won over other Italian designers like Donatella Versace, who recently dedicated her latest fashion line to the President. So cool.

Newly Named CIA Director Is Italian-American..Calabrese To Be Exact.

Why do I love America? Ah..well its the only country where the President elect Obama appoints a first generation son of an Italian immigrant to be the director of the CIA. To be exact Leon Panetta is Calabrese. Leon Panetta was also President Clinton's chief of staff. This is a huge deal that major appointed positions in the new White House are being filled with our very own, Italian Americans. Please learn more about Leon Panetta.
