Here is an interesting article about the political correctness on describing a person's origin who is American. As Italian Americans, we tend to describe ourselves as Italian Americans, but really are we just Americans, or does this term only apply to when we are in discussion about our background culture. A very touchy subject for many, and this article is all over it.

Sorry to disagree. My father from Italy was Italian American. I was born here. I'm American. And that's how my classmates in my semester in Italy referred to me: The American.
